Online Safety Update - 26th June 2020
You will have seen the ‘Granny’ statement (see below) on the newsletter for several weeks, to help promote online safety at home during the current lockdown. Issues on-line have increased dramatically throughout the country during the lockdown period. One officer in the Derbyshire Constabulary Neighbourhood Safeguarding Team has, this week alone, seen and dealt with issues where a 9 and 10 year olds have been targeted in relation to receiving and being asked for indecent images. One occurred via Tik Tok and one via on-line gaming. Please remain vigilant around your children’s online activities.
Derbyshire have an On-line Safety Facebook page where there is lots of information, and parents can ask any questions and one of digital PCSO’s will respond.
They have also share a brilliant guide to TikTok. Click here TikTok can be a wonderful app and it has enjoyed a dramatic rise to become one of the most popular social media apps on the planet. Young people, in particular, love its short-form video focus, and it is now one of Generation Z’s favourite tools of expression. There’s a good chance your child is either using it already or asking to be allowed on it – but what exactly is it, and are there any risks you should be aware of? This guide will help you understand more about what it is and how to keep your child safer if they are using it.

How safe are YOU Online?
The safety of our children is paramount to us as a school. As part of that we are constantly supporting the children with online safety lesson. However, we (as adults) did not have those lessons at school so how safe are you online? To support adults with their online presence and that of their children Derbyshire County Council have developed the Digital MOT. This is a cyber security assessment tool developed by the Community Safety Unit at Derbyshire County Council, in partnership with the Cybercrime Unit at Derbyshire Constabulary.
The MOT will take less than 5 minutes to complete and you will find out how safe you are and how you could be safer online.
The MOT website says,
“Phones, computers and tablets are part of everyday life - online banking, shopping, email and social media. But the longer you spend online, the more risks you are exposed to. So it's more important than ever to take steps to protect your accounts, data and devices from cyber criminals. By answering a few simple questions, we'll tell you the most important things you can do to protect yourself online. We'll email your personalised results in a colour-coded way.”
I have already do the MOT and found it useful for me and my children at home. I hope you do too.
